Water & Sewer Heavy Equipment Operator

Key Responsibilities

  • Knowledge of all SPWS company policies and safety standards.
  • Ability to operate backhoe, trackhoe, track loader, bulldozer, mini excavator, and skid steer.
  • Experience with digging near utility lines and using safe standards.
Job Summary
  • Perform routine maintenance, including minor service, maintenance, and cleaning of equipment.
  • Responsible for alerting the mechanic of any significant problems.
  • Coordinate machine actions with other activities, positioning or moving loads in response to hand or audio signals from crew members.
  • Take caution to avoid potential hazards or obstructions, such as utility lines, other equipment, other workers, or falling objects.
  • Check fuel supplies at job sites to ensure adequate availability.
  • Locate underground services, such as pipes or wires, prior to beginning work.
  • Monitor operations to ensure that health and safety standards are met.
  • Keep record of material or equipment usage or problems encountered.
  • Must have initiative, ability, and willingness to perform and assist with other job positions for job completion as requested.
  • Ability to repair concrete curbs, sidewalks, driveways, and roadways.
  • Ability to repair and pave streets.

Personal Requirements

Service Department Meter Technician

Key Responsibilities

  • This position is responsible for the installation, inspection, testing, maintenance, and repair of all types of electrical/water meters and instrument-rated metering equipment and control systems used in a distribution electric/water utility
  • Disconnect and reconnect electric and water meters, even if the accounts are delinquent
  • Collect meter readings for electric and water meters
  • Maintenance and troubleshooting of traffic control signals, school zone flashing lights, and caution lights
  • Troubleshoot power outages
  • Replace fuses for taps and/or transformers with a long stick
  • Troubleshoot power quality issues
  • Assist other SPS personnel under qualified supervision in restoring power during power outages.
  • Work with many different departments to make sure their needs are taken care of, to keep day-to-day operations moving
  • Carry out the performance of the job utilizing all required safety procedures and equipment
  • Ability to operate a variety of office equipment, including a personal computer, printers, copy machines, telephones, and mobile devices
  • Ability to work irregular hours for assignment completion and flexibility to change scheduling and report to work on short notice during emergencies.
  • Perform inventory control duties as assigned. Become familiar with equipment, issuance procedures, and records
  • Develop a working knowledge of meter programming software and applications.
  • Ensure tools and equipment are in safe working conditions and well-maintained.
  • Ability to perform call duty after designated training period, and must live within a 30-minute commute via Google Maps
  • This role routinely requires extended periods of bending, squatting, climbing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, lifting, lifting in awkward positions, standing, and twisting
  • Also, working in inclement weather conditions, such as extreme heat, extreme cold, rain, ice, snow, and wind
  • Service work orders-requires digging, bending, lifting, and twisting
  • Knowledge of and the ability to read and relate theoretical concepts and instruments in documents, drawings, and specifications to practical application
  • Ability to learn how to safely operate and maintain equipment: trucks, trailers, forklifts
  • Accurate reading skills: reading labels, job site maps/directions, instruction manuals, and written instructions
  • Personal tool maintenance: maintain hand tools and equipment required for the position
  • Ability to work independently or in a team setting and collaborate with other departments/divisions as necessary
  • Any other work deemed necessary by Shelbyville Power System management
